Why PDFs get so big

Most of a PDF’s size comes from images: scanned pages and photos stored at high resolution. Text takes very little space. That is why scanned documents compress the most, while text-only PDFs are already small.

Choosing the compression level

Use light compression for documents you will print. Use stronger compression to get under email limits (often 20–25 MB) or upload portals that accept only 1–5 MB. Check that small text is still readable after compressing.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the content. Scanned and image-heavy PDFs often shrink a lot; text-only PDFs shrink only a little because they are already small.

Text stays sharp in text-based PDFs. In scanned PDFs the text is part of the image, so very strong compression can make it harder to read.

Each PDF can be up to 100 MB.
