Which archive format should you choose?
ZIP opens with a double-click on Windows and macOS, so it is the best choice for sharing. 7Z compresses more tightly, but older Windows versions and macOS need an extra app to open it. TAR bundles files together without compressing them and is common on Linux. TAR.GZ (also .tgz) is a TAR file compressed with gzip, widely used for Linux software and server backups.
What happens to the files inside
The files and folders inside the archive are unpacked and repacked in the new format exactly as they are. Nothing inside is converted or compressed differently, and the folder structure stays the same.
