When to compress images

Large photos slow down websites, fill up email attachments and are rejected by upload forms that set limits such as 100 KB, 200 KB or 1 MB. Compressing removes data the eye barely notices, so the image looks the same but loads faster and fits the limit.

Choosing the compression level

For photos, a quality of 70–85% usually halves the file size with no visible difference. Go lower only if you must hit a strict size limit. Resizing an image to the width it will actually be displayed at saves even more than compression alone.

Moderate compression is not visible to most people. Very strong compression can add blur or blocky areas, so check the result before using it.

Resize it to around 600–800 pixels wide and compress at 60–70% quality. Passport and form photos usually reach the limit this way.
